Perdue has big lead, polls say | ajc.com
Two polls released today show Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue has a double-digit lead over Democratic challenger Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor with 11 weeks to go before the Nov. 7 election.

An InsiderAdvantage poll showed Perdue leading Taylor 49 percentage points to 32 percent with 19 percent undecided. And a poll by Strategic Vision LLC showed Perdue leading 54 to 41 percentage points with 5 percent undecided.

The Insider Advantage poll was conducted Aug. 21 among 500 voters and was weighted for age, race, gender and party affiliation. It claims a margin of error of 4 percent. The Strategic Vision poll quizzed 800 “likely Georgia voters” Aug. 18-20, 2006, and claims a margin of error of 3 percent.

Most campaign observers from both parties expect the race to tighten as the election nears. The fall election season does not shift into high gear until after Labor Day.

Perdue is leading Taylor among at least one group of voters that often support Democrats — women, according to the InsiderAdvantage poll. Perdue leads Taylor among female voters, 47 percentage points to 36 percent.

The governor has also captured 15 percent of the African-American vote to Taylor’s 47 percent. Plus, Perdue has the support of 19 percent of Democrats, while Taylor has 60 percent.
