Schwarzenegger Tops Angelides: In an election for Governor of California today, 8/28/06, incumbent Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger defeats Democratic challenger Phil Angelides 52% to 38%, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for KABC-TV Los Angeles, KGTV-TV San Diego, KPIX-TV San Francisco, and KXTV-TV Sacramento. Schwarzenegger leads 30:1 among Republicans and 2:1 among Independents. 17% of Democrats cross over to vote for the Republican Schwarzenegger. Angelides wins by 16 points in the Bay Area and Northern Coast. Schwarzenegger wins by 21 points in Greater L.A., by 23 points in the Central Valley, and by 27 points in the Inland Empire. Those who approve of President George W. Bush’s job performance support Schwarzenegger by 82 points. Those who disapprove of Bush’s performance support Angelides by 25 points. President Bush’s approval rating among likely California voters is 34%. Schwarzenegger was first elected in 2003 in a Special Election to recall and replace Democratic Governor Gray Davis. The election is in 10 weeks, on 11/7/06.
