Young gets 31%. Campbell leads 14:1 among Republicans. Young leads 10:1 among Democrats. Campbell leads by 4 points among Independents. Republicans outnumber Democrats 2:1 among likely voters. Young gets 61% of the votes of those who disapprove of President Bush’s job performance, but only 5% of the votes among those who approve of Bush. President George W. Bush’s approval rating among likely voters in California’s 48th Congressional District is 48%. This contest is almost a rematch of the Special Election in CA48 on 12/6/05, when Campbell defeated Young by 17 points to replace Republican Congressman Chris Cox, who resigned his seat in August 2005 to become Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In the 12/6/05 Special Election, American Independent Candidate Jim Gilchrist, running on the issue of illegal immigration, received 26% of the vote, finishing just 2 points behind Young.
