Dreier Re-elected in CA26: In an election for the U.S. House of Representatives today, 8/16/06, in California’s 26th Congressional District, incumbent Republican David Dreier defeats Democratic challenger Cynthia Matthews, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KABC-TV Los Angeles. 12 weeks from the 11/7/06 general election, Dreier gets 48% of the vote. Matthews gets 35%. This contest is a rematch of the 2004 election, in which Dreier beat Matthews by 11 points. Dreier wins 5:1 among Republicans. Matthews wins 5:1 among Democrats. Independents favor Dreier by 21 points. Republicans outnumber Democrats among likely voters by 50% to 35%. Matthews gets 62% of the votes of those who disapprove of President Bush’s job performance, but only 7% of the votes among those who approve of Bush. President George W. Bush’s approval rating among likely voters in California’s 26th Congressional District is 44%. Dreier was first elected to Congress in 1980.
