COUNCIL BLUFFS - Democratic candidate for governor Chet Culver unveiled his education plan Thursday, vowing to help rural Iowa schools recruit and retain teachers.
Culver’s plan, dubbed “education for a lifetime,” calls for increased funding for teacher salaries and early education programs.
He proposes to devote $20 million to raising teacher salaries, adding to the $210 million over three years that was approved by the Legislature in the spring. Iowa ranks 41st in the nation in teacher pay.
Culver, Iowa’s secretary of state, was once a high school teacher. He presented his plan Thursday at the Loess Hills Area Education Agency 13 office.
