Inside Bay Area - Poll: Angelides may not stand a chance
SACRAMENTO — Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has jumped to a commanding double-digit lead over Democratic challenger Phil Angelides in the gubernatorial race on the Nov. 7 ballot, according to a recent Public Policy Institute poll released today.

The findings show the governor has nearly doubled his lead since the first post-primary election poll last month by San Jose State University’s Survey and Policy Research Institute — an indication to some that Angelides’ campaign may essentially be over.

“Obviously, the PPIC poll is not good news for Angelides, in large part because it reinforces the news media’s prejudgment that Angelides doesn’t have a chance,” said Tim Hodson of the Center for California Studies in Sacramento.

“But Angelides can make a comeback,” he said. “Most voters won’t really focus on the election for weeks yet.”

Some 43 percent of likely voters support Schwarzenegger compared to 30 percent for Angelides, the state treasurer, says the survey by the San Francisco-

based Public Policy Institute of California.
